چکیده

Modifications in the production pattern of heavy quark bound states have long been considered to provide sensitive signatures for the thermal properties of dense matter created in heavy ion collisions. The original concept of Matsui and Satz for quarkonium suppression as signature for deconfinement in heavy ion collisions has been challenged recently through lattice studies of spectral functions, which indicate the persistence of heavy quark bound states at temperatures well above the transition, as well as through the refined analysis of hadronization and recombination models, which take into account the thermal evolution of the medium generated in a heavy ion collision. We will review here recent developments on these topics. PACS. 11.15.Ha , 11.10.Wx, 12.38.Mh, 25.75.Nq

Quarkonium Production and Colour Deconfinement in Nuclear Collisions

The suppression of quarkonium production in nucleus-nucleus collisions was originally proposed as a signal of colour deconfinement. Strong “anomalous” J/ψ suppression in Pb-Pb collisions has been reported at this Conference by the NA50 Collaboration. Is this suppression really anomalous? Can we conclude that the quark-gluon plasma is already discovered? What has to be done next? I address these...

String Breaking and Quarkonium Dissociation at Finite Temperatures

Recent lattice studies of string breaking in QCD with dynamical quarks determine the in-medium temperature dependence of the heavy quark potential. Comparing this to the binding energies of different quarkonium states, we check if these can decay into open charm/beauty in a confined hadronic medium. Our studies indicate in particular that the χc and the ψ ′ dissociate into open charm below the ...

Parton Percolation and J/ψ Suppression

The geometric clustering of partons in the transverse plane of nuclear collisions leads for increasing A or √ s to percolation. In the resulting condensate, the partons are de-confined but not yet in thermal equilibrium. We discuss quarkonium dissociation in this precursor of the quark-gluon plasma, with an onset of dissociation when the saturation scale of the parton condensate reaches that of...

Quarkonium correlators at finite temperature and potential models

We discuss the calculations of quarkonium spectral functions in potential models and their implications for the interpretation of the lattice data on quarkonium correlators. In particular, we find that melting of different quarkonium states does not lead to significant change in the Euclidean time correlators. The large change of the quarkonium correlators above deconfinement observed in the sc...

Ground State Quarkonium Spectral Functions Above Deconfinement
